The Night Circus by Erin Morgernstern

Out of 5♦ – ♦♦♦♦♦

I got this book at Christmas as well after I saw it in a bookshop before Christmas and was immediately drawn in by the striking cover. I love the use of 3 colours on the front cover and the beautiful imagery. I guess it reminded me of Alice in Wonderland a bit (as it is a fantasy novel). I turned it around to find a very cryptic blurb “The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it… It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.” I was hooked.

I absolutely loved this book and am proud to call myself one of the rêveurs after reading it (follower of the circus) I loved the story that was nothing like what I have read before. I love how the magical aspect is used and I loved how so much was kept from me as a reader but enough was told to keep me hooked. Absolutely un-put-down-able even though it is a rather long book. If I had to have one complaint, it would be how the book changes time and place almost every chapter. I was confused at first until I realised that the date and location are written in small print beneath the chapter title. However, I do like this since events slowly tie up over time into a wonderful knot of an end.

The story follows two characters mainly. The two that are depicted on the front cover. Their names are Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair and they are pitted against one another in an epic battle of wit and strength. This challenge is simply explained to the players as a game of which they take turns to make a move, nothing more. When questioned neither tutor will speak another word on the matter. I very much enjoyed reading about these two characters and how they grow in strength and age and slowly fall for one another.

The author of this genius piece of literature is Erin Morgenstern. She grew up in Massachutes in the U.S.A. This book was published in 2011 and she has recently (like super recent when I’m writing this because you have to preorder it) released a book called The Starless Sea. She does have a beautiful website that I will link here and fore mentioned website has some interesting information on her such as the fact that she owns an adorable kitten!

*Yeah, I’m not very good at this whole once a month thing….I’m sorry…
